Summary
In a multi-centre, double-blind crossover trial of 1800 mg. ibuprofen daily, 3.6 g. aspirin daily, and placebo, 437 patients with osteoarthrosis affecting various large joints were studied for 8 weeks. Judged by patient preference for drug or placebo treatment periods, both drugs were found to be superior to placebo and about equally as effective in relieving pain and in improving the ability to perform a selected activity. Gastro-intestinal side-effects were substantially fewer in patients receiving ibuprofen.
