Summary
The results are reported of a study of the influence of chronic (20 days) aspirin ingestion (60 mg./kg. daily) on salicylic acid plasma levels carried out in 6 healthy volunteers. Peak plasma levels were recorded on Day 7 for 5 trial subjects following which there was a steady decrease in the plasma levels estimated in blood samples obtained at 08.00 hours. On Day 21 the average salicylic acid plasma level in the 5 subjects was only 48 % of the value obtained on Day 7. The sixth subject revealed a maximum decrease of 24% after attaining a peak level on Day 10. The implications of these findings, relevant to drug-interaction studies on long-term patient therapy, are discussed.
