Intravenous Lorazepam in Acute Anxiety States

Pages 453-458 | Received 27 Aug 1975, Published online: 07 Aug 2008

Summary

The effects of a single-dose intravenous injection of lorazepam at three different dose levels (2.5 mg., 5.0 mg., and 7.5 mg.) were studied in 30 hospitalised patients with acute anxiety neurosis. Patients' symptoms were rated on a 5-point severity scale before and after treatment, and an overall evaluation was made of patient response. The results showed that intravenous lorazepam was effective and well-tolerated at all three dose levels. Doses higher than 2.5 mg. did not seem to increase the anxiolytic activity, but the duration of sedative-hypnotic effect was dose related and was especially marked with the 7.5 mg. dose. Paradoxically, treatment with lorazepam was liked by all the patients in spite of the C.N.S. side-effects. There was no evidence of any adverse effects on haematopoietic, renal, and hepatic functions or of undue C.N.S. depression at any of the dose levels.
