Summary
Intravenous administration of 8 mg. dexamethasone has been found to suppress completely the plasma 11-hydroxycorticosteroid (11-OHCS) response to insulin-induced hypoglycaemia in 6 patients with rheumatoid arthritis. It is suggested that the 'stress' response fails to override the negative feedback mechanism if the circulating level of corticosteroid is suficiently high, or if the pharmacological 'stress' is qualitatively or quantitatively inadequate to override the normal physiological control.
