Contraception in the menopausal woman

Summary

The advantages and disadvantages of the different methods of fertility control for women at the menopause are discussed. Based on the author's experience the contraceptive techniques especially suitable are the diaphragm and the intra-uterine device. Oral contraceptives are not recommended for women in this age group because of the possible risks of myocardial infarction. It is suggested that contraception should be continued until the woman has had at least 12 months of continuous amenorrhoea.
