Summary
A double-blind, randomized trial was carried out in 54 depressed in-patients to compare the antidepressant efficacy and side-effects of 60 mg mianserin per day with that of 150 mg imipramine per day over a 28-day period. With regard to clinical efficacy, no significant differences could be found between the two treatments assessed using a number of different rating scales. The overall frequency of side-effects was significantly lower with mianserin than with imipramine. Autonomic symptoms increased in severity during treatment with imipramine but not with mianserin, and patients treated with imipramine had a reduction in blood pressure which was not observed during mianserin treatment.
