Abstract

Gary Grove Koch, Professor of Biostatistics and Director of the Biometric Consulting Laboratory in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was born January 6, 1942, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. He received the BS in Mathematics (December 1962) and the MS in Industrial Engineering (June 1963) from The Ohio State University, and he received the Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (June 1968). In December 1967, he was appointed to the faculty of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina. His principal research interest is the development of statistical methodology for the analysis of categorical data and its corresponding application to a wide range of settings in the health sciences. In 1972, he was elected fellow of the American Statistical Association. In 1974, he received the Spiegelman Award from the American Public Health Association. In recognition of his significant professional activity, DeMontfort University at Leicester (U.K.) awarded him an Honorary Doctorate of Science in 1996. In 2007, Gary Koch received the John E. Larsh, Jr. Award for Mentorship from the University of North Carolina in recognition of his impact as a mentor.
