Abstract
Home care for children with chronic conditions includes a wide range of activities designed to provide health care and related services outside an institutional setting. The purpose of this article is to review the history of home care for children in the United States with special emphasis on the care of children with chronic conditions. The discussion traces the development of home care and the studies that provide evidence of the efficacy and effectiveness of home care, including our own studies of a noncategorical institution-based program. After this review, the article discusses some of the lessons learned in providing home care and raises questions that need to be addressed in the future in both the research and policy arenas.
