A New Technique for Demonstrating the Actor-Observer Bias

Pages 301-303 | Published online: 20 Nov 2009

Abstract

In this article we describe a new classroom exercise for introducing the actor-observer bias in social perception. We describe 2 experiments that compared our new technique (which involves resolving interpersonal dilemmas for oneself and another) with a previously established technique (judging the applicability of traits for oneself and another). Results of Experiment 1 suggested that the new technique is as effective as the old technique for demonstrating the actor-observer bias and that quiz scores were better for those who completed the new technique. Results of Experiment 2 indicated that the new technique is more enjoyable, memorable, valuable, and helpful and more likely to be recommended by students for use in the classroom.
