Abstract
The specific care giving behaviors presented in children's picture books may contribute to children's developing knowledge and understanding related to illness, injury, and health. A content analysis of 119 children's picture books found that children were presented most frequently as the characters experiencing illness, rather than injury or general health scenarios. Illness causation information was limited and focused on preoperational concepts. The sample of books reviewed indicated an emphasis on the social-emotional aspects related to care and recovery compared to concepts of causation. Caregiving by mothers and health care professionals was emphasized, as were the positive consequences of experiencing an illness.
