The Communicative Contexts of Elderly Social Support and Health: A Theoretical Model

Pages 123-143 | Published online: 12 Nov 2009

Abstract

Although interpersonal communication lies at the heart of social support processes, there has been very little recourse in this literature to the models and methods of the language and communication sciences. Communication accommodation theory is proposed here as an appropriate interactional model able to specify social support in action, its contextual and motivational antecedents, and its health outcomes. The model is related explicitly to themes in the rapidly expanding literature on elderly communication and intergenerational talk.
