Abstract
The community health nurse's role in the prevention of fetal alcohol syndrome as well as interventions for the child born with this condition are presented in this paper. Fetal alcohol syndrome results from maternal drinking and affects a child's physical and developmental functioning throughout his or her life. A case study of an alcohol addicted mother and her fetal alcohol syndrome child illustrate nursing approaches which can be employed by the community health nurse who has a fetal alcohol syndrome infant in a caseload.
