The Mentally Retarded Adult: A Nursing Perspective

Abstract

One out of one hundred persons in the adult population has some degree of mental retardation. The nurse has a distinct role in helping to normalize the life of those who have difficulty in meeting the demands of society. This article defines the concepts of mental retardation and normalization, and identifies the unique as well as common nursing needs in the mentally retarded population. Included is an exploration of the issues involved in helping the mentally retarded population integrate into their respective communities.
