A Professional Challenge: Nurses and Smoking

Pages 139-146 | Published online: 24 Nov 2009

Abstract

In this article, we examine the issue of smoking behavior among health professionals who are nurses. Findings from a statewide study of nurses and smoking in Wisconsin are presented. The findings describe nurses' attitudes toward smoking, and their professional behavior is analyzed by smoking status. An action plan for nursing education and practice based on these findings and consistent with other research is presumed and discussed in relation to improving the health of nurses who smoke and the clients they serve.
