Diversity of Network Prime-Time Program Formats During the 1980s

Pages 17-28 | Published online: 17 Nov 2009

Abstract

This study examines trends in prime-time network program diversity, factoring in viewing share trends, competition from new video media, and the assumptions of internetwork rivalry. Findings suggest that, even in the competitive video marketplace of the 1980s, shifts in program diversity were rather limited. The imposing specter of new media competition, then, has not forced the networks to fundamentally alter their programming "game plan."
