Searching for Order in Social Motivation

Pages 199-216 | Published online: 19 Nov 2009

Abstract

Regularities in social motivation are derived from a causal analysis of the ability-effort distinction, which has implications for perceptions of responsibility. A responsibility analysis is then extended and applied to reactions to the stigmatized, help-giving, and aggression. The relation between explanation in terms of processes and mechanisms versus function is examined. Finally, an attempt is made to integrate social motivation with some aspects of intrapersonal motivation.
