Prisoner's Dilemma as a Model for Understanding Decisions

Pages 230-231 | Published online: 20 Nov 2009

Abstract

Two classroom demonstrations based on the prisoner's dilemma illustrate some elements of decision making. The demonstrations require minimal preparation and allow all members of the class to participate. In the first demonstrations, students ask for $1. 00 or $.10, with the condition that, if more than 20% of the class asks for $1.00, no one gets anything. In the second demonstration, pairs of students play a short matching game. The scores earned by students reflect whether they have played cooperatively or competitively.
