Transcendental Television? A Discussion of Joan of Arcadia

Pages 1-12 | Published online: 13 Nov 2009

Abstract

Does television only offer audiences the profane? Or is there room for the sacred to be shown on your TV set? Using Joan of Arcadia as a model in this article, I discuss the potential for television to embody Schrader's (1972) model of the transcendental form in film and bring us closer to divinity. I also discuss what factors converged to make a space for this style on primetime network television.
