Assessment of Substance Abuse Problems

Implications for Clinical Supervision

Pages 91-108 | Published online: 13 Oct 2010

Abstract

Effective assessment of alcohol problems is a critical skill given the prevalence and major consequences of the problem for clients and society in general. In addition, faulty and biased assessments can lead to inappropriate treatment by practitioners as well as enabling behaviors on their part that tend to exacerbate clients' problems. The ways in which clients' significant others also can enable their substance abuse problems, and some assessment tools for enhancing the assessment process, are included in the discussion.
