Abstract
Research on clinical supervision in Human Communication Disorders has grown in both quantity and complexity. A review of 321 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) national convention presentations and 64 refereed journal articles between 1972 and 1987, as well as 24 dissertations, reveals specific patterns and challenges in supervision research. Patterns are noted in: (a) the quantity of research, (b) types of presentations and research, (c) authorship, and (d) topic areas. Challenges identified are a need to: (a) focus on questions of supervisory effectiveness, (b) expand the core of supervision researchers, and (c) disseminate clinical supervision research more widely.
