ABSTRACT
Contemporary approaches to eclectic supervision parallel developments in integrative and eclectic psychotherapy These approaches differ from earlier ones by being more systematic, more consistent, and more likely to incorporate both important relational and technical prescriptions. This paper highlights six recent advances in the field and examines their future applications to the problems and processes of supervision. We propose that effective eclectic supervision will: (1) embrace systematic eclecticism, not syncretism; (2) match treatments according to multiple markers; (3) address therapeutic relationships of choice; (4) customize supervision to the individual trainee; (5) assess therapeutic skill; and (6) model the integrative spirit.
