ABSTRACT

This paper describes group work for substance using men with HIV concerns and presents an integrative model. The principles of harm reduction are defined and a harm reduction perspective within the context of group work is explored. Challenges to the provision of services to this diverse and sizable population are discussed, including (1) organizational resistance and support, (2) integrating clients of diverse backgrounds into cohesive groups, (3) themes that arise in groups for substance using men with HIV concerns, (4) identifying group and individual goals, and (5) countertransferential issues. Finally, a case illustration is presented to highlight the experience of clients served and demonstrate suggested intervention strategies.
