Why Not an Independent Practice for Dental Hygienists?

&
Pages 31-48 | Published online: 26 Oct 2008

Abstract

This article examines the universal legal requirement that dental hygienists work under the control of dentists and forbids independent hygienist-patient relationships. The scientific evidence supporting the repeal of this requirement as well as benefits from doing so are reviewed. Resistance to such a move is identified and evaluated concluding that repeal of this prohibi- tion is indicated.
