Abstract
Within the past decade, an image of older adults aging healthfully has emerged. One of the keys to staying vital and healthy in old age is exercise. Exercise can increase muscle strength, endurance and flexibility, while decreasing body fat However, physical health is but one dimension of total health. Does exercise have any effect on the other five, namely the emotional, mental, social, spiritual and enviromental dimensions of health? Using four groups participating in regular physical activity, we investigated how exercise affected all six dimensions and contributed to the total quality of life of the participants.
