Abstract

The Senior Odyssey was developed to promote social and intellectual engagement among older adults. Modeled after the Odyssey of the Mind program, Senior Odyssey teams meet for one hour weekly over the course of 20 weeks to engage in creative and collaborative problem solving. Within the larger context of the Senior Odyssey research program, qualitative assessments (i.e., interviews, observations) were conducted to provide an understanding of how the program was experienced by participants. Experiences are described in terms of social engagement, intellectual engagement, personal growth, and the program as a unique opportunity. Findings suggested that many participants found the program intellectually stimulating and that it filled a unique niche in their lives.
