CASE STUDY

The Effects of Time-Out and DRA on the Aggressive Behavior of a Spirited Two-Year-Old

Pages 51-56 | Received 15 Aug 1999, Accepted 15 Sep 1999, Published online: 21 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this case study was to examine the impact of using time-out and differential reinforcement of alternative behavior as a strategy for dealing with the aggressive behavior of one of my own children. Sibling rivalry was reaching an epic level in my household. As a full-time mom and graduate student, I yearned for a more loving, cooperative relationship between my two sons and was frustrated with my ineffective attempts to combat the problem. I decided to utilize behavior modification skills that I was learning in my graduate program. I did not expect miracles, but was desperate for an effective strategy that did not involve empty threats and a raised voice.
