Adapting the Traditional EAP Model to Effectively Serve Battered Women in the Workplace

Abstract

While it is known that domestic violence is frequently correlated with chemical dependency, EAP professionals have been slow to identify and address this ubiquitous social problem. The authors believe it is crucial for EAP professionals to recognize the numerous disguised ways in which domestic violence presents itself both in the workplace and in the EAP assessment interview. It is suggested that an alternative to the traditional assessment and referral model is indicated in order to effectively serve this population. A new model of clinical EAP practice with this population is introduced.
