ABSTRACT

Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are a popular form of employee benefit that provides counseling services for employees with personal problems that may affect them at work. Although most EAPs focus on problems related to substance abuse among employees, some EAP administrators have expanded their programs to include Wellness Programs for active fitness and health management and Health Promotion programs which educate employees about health, fitness, nutrition, and mental health concerns (Masi, 1984). By enhancing their programs, program administrators are reaching out to low risk employees that traditional EAPs do not normally contact This paper examines existing research on EAPs that may help explain the current status of the EAP profession and suggests areas for additional research with pragmatic applications.
