Oocyte Maturation During Hormone-Induced Spawning in Largemouth Bass, Micropterus salmoides

Pages 19-27 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

ABSTRACT

Induced spawning in largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides with injected hormones for experiments in genome manipulation was evaluated. Luteinizing hormone-releasing hoimone analogue (LH-RHa) and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) were injected to stimulate production of viable oocytes in female largemouth bass for fertilization. Male largemouth bass received LH-RHa and carp pituitary (CP) injections to stimulate spermiation. The progression of largemouth bass oocytes during the stages of final oocyte maturation (FOM) were used to evaluate hormone efficacy leading to ovulation. Results indicate that hormone injections are effective for FOM, but an incomplete stimulus for ovulation in largemouth bass.
