Clinical Approaches in Substance Abuse Treatment for Use with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Adolescents

Abstract

This article discusses the situation faced by deaf and hard of hearing adolescents who are dealing with a substance abuse problem. The article looks at the impact of communication and Deaf Culture as well as barriers to treatment and recovery for this population. Methods for dealing with and overcoming these barriers are discussed. A model chemical dependency treatment program, the Minnesota Chemical Dependency Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Individuals, is described to the reader.
