CLINICAL CASE REFLECTIONS

The Therapeutic Value of Self-Disclosure in Group Treatment When the Clinician Has a Catastrophic Illness

Pages 1-9 | Received 15 Jun 2000, Published online: 17 Oct 2008

Abstract

In this article, the analyst's straggle with a life-threatening illness provides the impetus for reflecting on the uses and misuses of self-disclosure, given the norms of “real-self being,” spontaneity and honesty that she wishes to encourage in her therapy group. Also discussed is the combination of group context and disclosure of life-threatening illness to produce a unique and uniquely intense transference/countertransference paradigm.
