Abstract
This paper examines the case of a 39-year-old religious patient whose chief presenting complaint involved anxiety associated with his work performance. As Carl's treatment unfolded, other themes also gained prominence. Chief amongst these was Carl's pervasive and evidently characterological tendency toward self-denial, and the significant linkage between the patient's selflessness and his religious views. Transference as well as countertransference dimensions of this case are also considered.
