Abstract
The task of referring college students to pscyhotherapy outside of the college setting is an opportunity for useful therapeutic intervention. Different meanings may be attached to counseling within the college and therapy outside. The decision to enter psychotherapy is a devleopmentally significant event in terms of the process of separation/individuation during the college years. The author distinguishes three therapeutic components of the referral process: (1) a cognitive component; (2) an experiential component; and (3) an interpretative component in which therapy is addressed as a developmental step. Case examples are used to illustrate.
