Utilizing Solution-Focused Counseling for Students on Academic Probation

Pages 39-53 | Published online: 18 Oct 2008

Abstract

Based upon the work of Steve de Shazer, an approach to intervention is outlined, and illustrated with specific case examples, to serve as a guide for facilitating the student's escape from a "problem-oriented" to a "solution-oriented" focus to get off academic probation. It stresses: (a) Seeking exceptions, i.e., descriptions of how the problem hasn't occurred; (b) Reframing unsuccessful solutions, i.e., descriptions wherein the student can visualize and experience the problem in a new way; (c) Identifying markers of progress, i.e., let the student know how s/he is progressing; and (d) Future focus, i.e., specify a positive outcome.
