THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS

Human Rights, Hate Crimes, and Hebrew-Christian Scripture

Pages 33-45 | Published online: 11 Oct 2008

Summary

This article seeks to contribute to a culture of human rights by challenging the use of Hebrew and Christian scriptures to characterize LGBT2 persons as moral transgressors and to justify or rationalize hate crimes against them. Scriptural passages used to support claims of immorality of LGBT2 persons—texts of terror—are examined. Then scriptural passages that are affirming of LGBT2 relationships—texts of empowerment—are considered. The author discusses implications for social work of advancing a culture of human rights.
