INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES FOR A NEW ERA

From Movement Demands to Legislation

Organizing in the LGBT Community in Mexico City

Pages 207-218 | Published online: 22 Sep 2008

SUMMARY

In August 1999, the First Meeting of Lesbians and Lesbian Feminists was held in Mexico City. From this meeting evolved an organized effort for expanded lesbian and gay rights in Mexico City. This article, which, of necessity, is seen through the author's dual role as participant/observer, or insider/outsider, attempts to trace the initial blossoming of two movement ideas-a lesbian kiss-in and legal recognition of same-sex relationships-and their eventual transformation into a major news media event and a proposed piece of city legislation.
