Biochemical and Molecular Regulation of Monoterpene Accumulation in Peppermint (Mentha × piperita)

, &
Pages 153-156 | Published online: 12 Oct 2008

SUMMARY

Recent advances in the biochemistry and molecular biology of monoterpene metabolism in peppermint suggest that increased accumulation of the menthol-rich essential oil in this species might be achieved by a general enhancement of the rate of biosynthesis and, more specifically, by increasing the expression of the gene encoding (−)-limonene synthase, the first committed step in monoterpene biosynthesis.
