Abstract
The preceding paper, reprinted from a 1947 journal, was selected as a Milestone in Nutritional Immunology because it was the first of a long series of research papers by Axelrod and his students, a series that extended through four decades. This paper reported on a marked deficiency in hemagglutinin antibody production by rats made deficient in one of three different B-group vitamins, i.e., pyridoxine, riboflavin, or pantothenic acid. In subsequent papers, Axelrod's group reported on a variety of immune system dysfunctions induced by deficiencies of many vitamins. Because of his pioneering work in the field, Abraham E. Axelrod, Ph.D., is certainly a modern day Forefather of Nutritional Immunology.
