Utilization of Group Projects in Teaching Social Work Research Methods

Abstract

In a effort to promote a awareness of the practical aspects of Social Work Research Methods, a new course was developed which utilized group projects facilitated by volunteer Social Work faculty. Benefits to students included an opportunity to participate in actual projects from conceptualization of the problem through the gathering and analysis of data and the presentation of results. Faculty received assistance in conducting research as well as the stimulation of directing students as they develop into both consumers and producers of scholarly work. In addition, students were socialized into an area of social work beyond the micro and macro practice issues traditionally included in the curriculum.
