Underestimated Effects of Goals and Rewards:

A Systematic Replication

Pages 59-71 | Published online: 22 Oct 2010

Abstract

Locke (1982) demonstrated the positive discriminative stimulus effect of a specific, difficult, assigned goal on a one-minute brainstorming task. A systematic replication of that experiment was conducted with a slight modification of the experimental treatments. The results suggest that the incentive value of goals is limited and that indirect, implicit reinforcement can have a powerful influence on task performance.
