A Suggestion System for Youth for Juvenile Offenders

Abstract

Rate of suggestions under an intervention package consisting of standardized suggestion forms and publicly posted responses was compared with its baseline (i.e., no suggestion form or public posting) frequency. Consistent with Quilitch's (1978) findings among employee participants, the rate of suggestions was greater under the intervention package. This study extended the generality and utility of Quilitch's intervention package respectively by implementing it among juveniles in a secure care unit of a center for juvenile offenders and by adding a discussion component to public posting of replies to suggestions. Juveniles submitted more suggestions during intervention phases (1.84 average weekly suggestions) compared with baseline phases (0.31 average weekly suggestions) within an ABAB research design. Cost-benefit data are presented. The intervention is characterized and discussed as a type of feedback system.
