Abstract
This article reports the results of a national study on the accessibility of prison facilities and programs for physically disabled inmates in state correctional systems. Survey methodology was utilized to determine the numbers and types of disabilities among inmates in such systems. Results suggest that fewer than one percent of either male or female inmates in state prisons are identified and classified as physically disabled. Inmate access to programs and facilities was assessed through use of an accessibility scale. Based on reports from prison administrators, access for disabled inmates is very limited both as to programs and as to facilities. Specific recornmendations are included to improve accessibility and to avoid litigation.
