Cancer Patient Visitor Programs

A Case for Accountability

Pages 45-58 | Published online: 18 Oct 2008

Abstract

Patient visitors bring a special perspective to the increasingly popular spectrum of self help programs for cancer patients. There is little empirical research, however, of the efficacy of these interventions. Research should examine the role of volunteers, locus of responsibility for program coordination, and guidelines for recruitment, screening, training, and continuing education. Findings can be used to develop standardized protocols to ensure that volunteers will be held accountable for their performance. Some benefits and costs of professionally directed patient visiting programs for both cancer patients and volunteer counselors are discussed.
