Abstract
This paper explores factors predictive of risk of institutionalization in 121 cancer patients aged 65 or older referred for visiting nurse services at time of discharge from 3 acute care teaching hospitals. Data on physical condition, psychological, mental and social variables were collected at discharge and again four months later. Analysis focused on the relationship between medical and psychosocial factors, and the risk of rehospitalization or institutionalization in an extended care facility. The key factor identified related to the rapidity of physical and functional deterioration.
