Abstract
Because nurses who specialize in oncology arc under almost constant stress, groups designed to reduce the effects of workrelated stress by enhancing the nursing staff problem-solving abilities seem particularly appropriate for these professionals. This article describe the technical aspects of the development and leadership of nursing staff support groups. Among the topics discussed are the purpose of such groups, their format and structure and the importance of an active leadership approach. Special leadership techniques and strategies arc described. Thc authors illustrate each topic with examples gathered during seven years of leading such groups at a cancer center.
