Abstract
Collaboration between hematologists and mental health professionals on a bone marrow transplant team reflects the, recognition that emotional stress is a significant component of this complicated treatment for leukemia and other life-threatening diseases. This new professional relationship relieves the pressures on the physician and nursing staff, provides psychological continuity in patient care, broadens the scope of the team's knowledge of patients and their families, and allows for preventive intervention. The mutual support system and the mutual identification established by the hematologist and the mental health professional enhance job satisfaction and provide an encouraging model for young physicians in the use of mental health services.
