Strengthening Patient Education Programs in Oncology

, PhD
Pages 75-81 | Published online: 18 Oct 2008

Abstract

Programs that help cancer patients accept their diagnosis and deal with their impending death no longer are sufficient. Patient education programs must become more comprehensive so they help patients and their families deal effectively with all aspects of the illness and its treatment. This article discusses standards for goals and content, ways of strengthening the ability of organizations to conduct such programs, how professionals can help these programs mature, and the need to incorporate new theoretical approaches, such as the theory of self-efficacy.
