Abstract
Changing trends in cancer treatment have resulted in new challenges in physical and psychosocial rehabilitation. Conservation surgery has had a favorable effect on patients' physical rehabilitation. The need for patients to choose a treatment option has increased the desirability of early and continuing psychosocial intervention. Combined treatments involving surgery, irradiation, and chemotherapy pose additional stresses, both financial and emotional. Vocational rehabilitation remains a priority for patients who are able to work. The hospital-based cancer rehabilitation program the author describes is a method of facilitating the cancer survivor's return to optimal functioning.
