Abstract
This article conceptualizes a model of duality, a continuous parallel process between oncology patients and their caregivers. The central shared themes-feelings of difference, survivor's guilt, uncertainty, loss of control, and existential pain-are explored in a context of reflection and preparation for survivorship. Understanding the strong affect that is an intrinsic part of the cancer experience for both patients and caregivers is normalizing and enables all involved to function in growth-enhancing ways. The rcsulting healthy self-awareness empowers caregivers to help themselves and their patients to manage life successfully through and beyond cancer.
