Support Groups in Oncology

Building Hope Through the Human Bond

Abstract

Oncology support groups are a growing presence in the United States. This article applies support group theory to the field of oncology, briefly outlining the role of social support, stress, and mutual aid. Steps in planning and conducting a professionally led oncology support group are reviewed, followed by a discussion of specific themes common to support groups for cancer patients.
